FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – On Monday, the NAU Athletics Department made a difference in the community in celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The day included a campus-wide march as well as the department's student-athletes and staff participating in a variety of community service activities throughout the Flagstaff community.
At the MLK Jr. Celebration following the march in the DuBois Center on campus, student-athletes Justus Walker, Alexis Clay and Corbin Jountti as well as track & field jumps coach Jade Ellis spoke on behalf of the athletics department.
Here's a look at the numbers and details of NAU's efforts on Monday:
300+ student-athletes and staff were involved
900+ hours of combined service by student-athletes and staff
4,000 hours of community service completed by student-athletes this academic year to date
MLK Jr. March – Men's and Women's Basketball, all freshman student-athletes
Arboretum – Volleyball: Cleared out leaves, weeds and cut branches after a presentation about forest health
Sunnyside & Southside – Football, Men's Track & Field, Soccer: Removed weeds, trash and general landscape clean up; swept sidewalks along Route 66; graffiti removal
Family Food Center – Swimming & Diving: Prepped food for the rest of the week; packed sack lunches and helped out with the kids program
Food Center Warehouse – Golf, Swimming & Diving: Sorted through donations and packed food in backpacks for weekend backpack/food program
Rio – Women's Track & Field: Picked up trash and cleaned up area along road by the Humane Society; removed invasive plant species
Build a Bag – Men's and Women's Tennis: Created reusable shopping bags for the community
