Northern Arizona Students-Athletes Post 3.07 Cumulative GPA

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona University athletics department recorded a cumulative grade point average of 3.07 GPA among its more than 300 student-athletes at the completion of the spring semester. It marked the 12th semester out of the last 13 overall that the Lumberjack student-athletes have recorded a 3.00 cumulative GPA or higher.

“We are excited about the student-athletes continued academic success,” said Interim Assistant Athletics Director for Academics Pam Lowie. “To have the whole department above a 3.00 cumulative grade point average is a testament to their ability to juggle academics and athletics.”

The Lumberjacks are coming off a fall semester in which they recorded the highest cumulative grade point average since 1997, recording a 3.16 GPA. Since 1998, NAU student athletes have earned a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher in 22 of the 24 semesters.

“Once again our student-athletes show that they truly are students first,” said Athletics Director Jim Fallis. “I am proud of their commitment to the NAU philosophies of academics, athletics and service.”

The Lumberjacks had 11 of the 15 intercollegiate teams record a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher led by women’s soccer at 3.42. Women’s basketball was close behind at 3.38, followed by women’s cross country (3.38), volleyball (3.33), women’s golf (3.31), men’s cross country (3.26) and swimming and diving (3.22).

Lowie credits the NAU academic community for their assistance in guiding the student-athletes.

“Our student-athletes rely on their academic advisors within their colleges and get great support from their professors,” said Lowie.

The volleyball team had the best semester GPA at 3.49, followed closely by women’s cross country (3.47), women’s golf (3.41), soccer (3.38) and women’s basketball (3.36). Overall, 11 of the 15 teams had a 3.0 or higher semester GPA.

Overall, 26 student-athletes earned a 4.0 GPA for the semester, representing all 15 squads. The soccer team led the department with seven student-athletes with a 4.0 GPA for the semester.

Recently, 39 student-athletes graduated during the spring 2010 commencement ceremonies.

The department’s academic efforts are led by Lowie and Academic Coordinator Diana Ulrey.
