FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Several members of the Northern Arizona football and soccer teams participated at the Fit Kids of Arizona Booth Aug. 13 in downtown Flagstaff at Heritage Square. The student-athletes interacted with kids getting ready for the Movies on the Square sponsored by Flagstaff Medical Center.
Fit Kids of Arizona is a regional community healthcare program developed by Verde Valley Medical Center, Flagstaff Medical Center and Northern Arizona Healthcare. The clinical program helps children and their families learn to maintain happy, healthy lifestyles while reducing the problems and illnesses associated with excess weight. The Fit Kids team focuses on assessing and treating all of the possible causes of excess body weight in children through medical examinations, physical activity counseling, nutrition counseling and behavioral change. Since opening in September 2009, more than 100 children have been referred to the Verde Valley program.
Student-athletes, coaches and athletic department staff combined to volunteer more than 4,500 hours over the 2009-10 academic year, assisting with events like Red Ribbon Week, Relay for Life, Welcome Back Jacks, St. Mary’s Food Bank, Adopt a Family, Climb to Conquer Cancer. In all, the department participated with more than 20 different organizations and/or events.
