OGDEN, Utah – Former Northern Arizona All-American football player Archie Amerson has been selected No. 16 on the Big Sky's "50 Greatest Male Athletes" list. The former Walter Payton Award winner played for the Lumberjacks for two seasons and broke many records along the way.
As a junior in 1995, he rushed for 1,117 yards on 193 carries with 12 touchdowns en route to First Team All-Conference honors. He also caught 23 passes for 223 yards. It was just a sampling of what was to come in 1996.
Amerson took the Division I-AA ranks by storm, rushing for 2,079 yards on 333 carries with 25 rushing touchdowns. His average of 189 yards per game led the nation, and at the time was a single-season Big Sky record. His 25 touchdowns remain the most ever by a Big Sky running back in a season. His 2,079 yards currently rank fourth in single-season history.
