First NAU Football Scrimmage Complete

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Today gave Northern Arizona football fans their first real look at the team, as the Lumberjacks held their first scrimmage of camp today at the Walkup Skydome. With plenty of fans in attendance, some even decided to tailgate before the scrimmage.

"As a team we wanted to play with great effort today," said head coach Jerome Souers. "I know that they're tired, but I thought that they showed great effort and enthusiasm. They flew around on both sides of the ball."

Flying around on both sides of the ball is accurate. Two of the big highlights on offense were a 65-yard rush by junior Casey Jahn, which led to a seven-yard touchdown by Patrick Baldenegro. The second score came on a 65-yard touchdown pass from senior Chase Cartwright to freshman Emmanuel Butler.

"Our defense has been tough, so to get a run like that from Casey was nice," said Souers. "It was well blocked, but Casey had a good read that showed his mobility as he was able to get into the open field."

NAU's defense appeared as if it hadn't lost any starters. The unit was credited with five sacks and an interception by senior safety Shawn Sharkey.

"I thought out D-Line played very hard today," said Souers. "They get better and better every day. There are a lot of new faces, but Coach (Travis) Baker has them on track to where they need to be. Siupeli Anau, one of our new defensive ends is a guy that can help us immediately. A lot of the defensive tackles inside are young. They're very physical and it's been fun watching them play."

Today marked a wrap-up of week one and exactly three weeks until kickoff at San Diego State.

"One week down we have some promising signs," Souers said. "Over the next few weeks we need to get better at ironing out the details and playing to the situation. Our specialists were a little off today. They showed some good signs, but we need to be a little more consistent. We have 21 days until kickoff, and we'll use every one of them to get ready."

NAU's next scrimmage will be held on Saturday, Aug. 16 at 4 p.m.
