FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona football program has announced its schedule for the 2017 season, including six home games to be played in the Walkup Skydome to complete its 11-game slate.
"We our happy to have a tough non-conference schedule once again this year," said head coach Jerome Souers. "Having top-25 FCS teams like Western Illinois and Illinois State coming to Flagstaff mixed with another competitive Big Sky slate is going to make the season fun and challenging at the same time."
NAU will open its season on the road at Arizona on Sept. 2. It'll be the second time in three years that the Wildcats and Lumberjacks will face off in Tucson. The Lumberjacks will then return to Flagstaff to host Western Illinois of the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
Week three will be a bye for NAU before it has to travel to FCS playoff competitor Cal Poly on Sept. 23 to kickoff Big Sky competition. NAU and Cal Poly last played each other in 2014.
NAU's first home conference game will be versus Northern Colorado on Sept. 30. The Lumberjacks' final non-conference game will be against the MVFC's Illinois State on Oct. 7. The Redbirds received an at-large bid to the playoffs in 2016.
Portland State will be NAU's opponent on Oct. 14 with the two teams playing each other for the first time since 2014. NAU holds a two-game win streak against the Vikings.
NAU's final three home games will feature UC Davis (Oct. 21), Sacramento State (Oct. 28) and Montana State (Nov. 11). The Lumberjacks defeated the three aforementioned teams in their most recent meetings.
The Lumberjacks have to go to Montana on Nov. 11 for a matchup against the Griz, and then NAU will play its final regular season game on the road at Southern Utah for the HintonBurdick Grand Canyon Trophy on Nov. 18.
It'll be the first time since the 2011 season that the Lumberjacks will play six games at home.
Game times and television designations will be released close to the start of the season.
