FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Northern Arizona's Patrick Baldenegro has been named the National Football Foundation Valley of the Sun 2017 FCS College Scholar Athlete of the Year. Baldenegro, along with the other college honorees and 50 of the top high school football-student athletes from northern and central Arizona, will be honored on Saturday, April 8, 2017, at the Hilton-Scottsdale Resort and Villas, Scottsdale, Ariz., at the chapter's 36th Annual NFF/Fiesta Bowl Scholar Athlete Awards Banquet.
Baldenegro, a native of Chandler, Ariz., is majoring in biomedical science and currently has a 3.80 grade point average. The tight end has earned AD Honor Roll recognition, is a three-time Golden Eagle Scholar Award winner and Big Sky Fall All-Academic Team member, in addition to earning Dean's List honors six times. He picked up 2013 and 2014 Big Sky Fall All-Academic nods.
This is Baldenegro's second recognition by the Valley of the Sun Chapter, as he was a high school scholar-athlete representing Chandler High School in 2010.
During his time at NAU, Baldenegro has completed over 55 hours of community service. He serves as the treasurer for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and has volunteered with the Flagstaff United School District, Welcome Jacks, Red Ribbon, and many more events.
Baldenegro will graduate this May with a bachelor's degree and plans to be a physician's assistant.
