Spring Forward Every Day, Practice #3
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona football team wrapped up spring practice number three this afternoon. The Lumberjacks took the field in the Walkup Skydome ready to tackle the week with four practices scheduled through Saturday.
With both sides getting adjusted to new plays and personnel, the veteran players who were once again looked upon to help ease the transition.
For senior wide receiver Emmanuel Butler, this is his third spring season and he has been looking more and more like the All-American he is every day. He is a tough competitor to slow down on the field and his one-handed grabs continue to stun the defense.
"Coming into my last season, I'm just trying to focus on the little things that got me here," said Butler. "The defense does a good job at making me work every day. I have to be very detailed to make plays on these guys. It is my job as a leader and captain of the offense to get these guys going. When Case (Cookus) puts the ball in the air, it's my job to go get it and fire up the offense."
Butler's athletic ability is amazing to watch, but NAU's defense challenges him every step of the way. He has to work for each and every catch he gets; and for the ones he doesn't catch – well that's when it's the defenses time to gloat.
"Our main emphasis of the defense is to get better every day. The little details are what we're focusing on right now," said junior Maurice Davison. "The offense is making big improvements. They are making the defensive backs better. They are helping us adjust to some things we are trying out on defense. Emmanuel and the rest of the offense is doing a good job at making us work hard so kudos to them."
You can catch Emmanuel and Maurice this week on the field as the Lumberjacks have three more practices scheduled this week. NAU will practice at 4 p.m. on Thursday and Friday of this week, while Saturday's practice is slated for 2 p.m.
