HUNTSVILE, Texas – The Northern Arizona men's basketball fell to Sam Houston State Tuesday night 73-49 in the final game before the holiday break for the Lumberjacks. The loss snapped the two-game winning streak for NAU since Interim Head Coach Dave Brown took over on Dec. 9.
The Lumberjacks (4-8) were coming off a 69-68 victory over Arizona State on Saturday in which they shot 59 percent in the second half to upset the Sun Devils. NAU shot just 24 percent in the opening half and managed just 16 points in falling behind by 22 points at the half. It was a deficit too big to overcome.
The Lumberjacks were out-scored 35-33 in the second half and were unable to cut into the deficit.
Senior Durrell Norman recorded his second career double-double, resetting his career highs with 18 points and 13 rebounds. He went 6-for-13 from the field and made 6-of-6 free throws in the contest. James Douglas and Gaellan Bewernick each contributed eight points in the game. Konner Tucker led the Bearkats with 25 points.
NAU shot just 31.5 percent from the field and made 2-of-15 three-point attempts.
The Bearkats, who came into the game shooting 39 percent for the season, shot 52 percent and out-rebounded the Lumberjacks 40-31.
NAU fell behind early in the contest, getting down by 10 points in the first minutes of the contest. The Lumberjacks struggled from the field while the Bearkats went on a 13-0 run to take a 21-4 lead at the 9:51 mark of the first half.
Douglas ended the run with a bucket at the 9:51 mark but NAU did not score again for another four minutes as Sam Houston extended the lead to 28-8.
The Lumberjacks were in danger of setting the school record for points in half of 11 set back in 1979-80 against Weber State but scored eight points over the final five minutes of the half.
Sam Houston State shot 52 percent in the first half in building a 38-16 lead at the half. Tucker scored 12 points for the Bearkats in the opening 20 minutes. NAU shot just 6-of-25 from the field and went 0-of-8 from beyond the arc.
Norman led the Lumberjacks with 10 points and seven rebounds in the first half.
NAU will be off for the next week for the holiday break before returning to Flagstaff next week to begin preparation for the start of Big Sky Conference play. NAU opens league play by hosting Sacramento State Thursday, Dec. 29 at the Rolle Activity Center.
