NAU Athletics Wins Back-to-Back Big Sky Presidents’ Cup
OGDEN, Utah – For the second straight year, Northern Arizona Athletics has captured the Big Sky Presidents’ Cup presented by Red Lion Hotels. NAU finished first in overall in athletic points for the second consecutive year, in addition to claiming the Big Sky Men’s and Women’s All-Sports Trophies in May.

Jacobsen, Smith Receive Big Sky's Top Scholar Athlete Award
OGDEN, Utah – Max Jacobsen and Stirling Smith were announced as NAU’s 2014 Big Sky Conference Scholar Athlete Award recipients on Thursday for their athletic and academic performance during the 2013-14 school year. Jacobsen and Smith were the top Senior Golden Eagle scholar-athlete honorees at the annual Golden Eagle Awards banquet in April.

Head Men’s Basketball Coach Jack Murphy and NAU Agree on Contract Extension
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Northern Arizona head men’s basketball coach Jack Murphy has received a contract extension that will run through 2019; the Arizona Board of Regents approved this week. Murphy completes his second season at NAU after leading the Lumberjacks to a second place finish in the Big Sky.

Upshur Completes Asian Tour with Elite Squad

NAU Captures Men’s and Women’s Big Sky All-Sports Trophy
OGDEN, Utah – Northern Arizona has captured both the men’s and women’s Big Sky All-Sports Trophies, the conference office announced Monday. The Lumberjacks went into the outdoor track championship with the lead, and a sweep by the men’s and women’s teams this past weekend secured NAU the win on both sides. The sweep is the first true sweep by any school since 2000-01.

Women’s Tennis and Swimming & Diving Rank in Top 10 Percent
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Northern Arizona women’s tennis and swimming & diving were both honored by the NCAA for earning Public Recognition Awards, based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate. These awards are given each year to teams with APRs in the top 10 percent in each sport. This is the second straight year women’s tennis has received the honor.

Forty-Three Student-Athletes to Receive Degrees This Weekend
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Forty-three Northern Arizona student-athletes will receive their degrees from the university this weekend as part of the Spring 2014 commencement ceremonies. When adding in the 15 student-athletes who participated in the Fall 2013 commencement ceremonies, the NAU Athletics Department produced a total of 58 graduates for the 2013-14 academic year.

Jacobsen, Smith Named Golden Eagle Top Scholar-Athletes
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona University Athletics Department held its 36th annual Golden Eagle Awards Tuesday at the High Country Conference Center to recognize its student-athletes for their stellar work in the classroom. Golden Eagle Distributors, Inc., honored 199 Lumberjack student-athletes for their scholastic and athletic accomplishments. The award recognizes student-athletes who maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average.

NAU Comeback Falls Short in Quarterfinals of Big Sky Tournament
OGDEN, Utah – The third-seeded Northern Arizona (15-17) men’s basketball team left it all on the floor tonight, but it’s comeback fell just short as No. 6 seed Northern Colorado (18-12) was able to pull off the upset. The Bears led by as many as 20 points in the second half, and yet NAU had a chance to tie or win it at the buzzer. Northern Colorado was able to escape with the 62-60 victory over NAU at the Dee Events Center in Ogden, Utah.

Men’s Basketball Upsets Big Sky Leader Weber State in Overtime
OGDEN, Utah – Northern Arizona (13-16, 10-8 Big Sky) took down Big Sky leader Weber State (16-10, 13-5 Big Sky) on the road tonight, 73-71. The Lumberjacks handed the Wildcats their first conference home loss this season, snapping a league record 27 straight home wins. Junior forward Quinton Upshur hit the game winning shot to sink Weber State. The win snapped a 12-game losing streak to the Wildcats.

GREELEY, Colo. – Junior Quinton Upshur netted a career-high 32 points against Northern Colorado, but it wasn’t enough as Northern Arizona fell to the Bears 87-72 in a battle of the top teams in the Big Sky. The loss snapped the Lumberjacks’ four-game win streak.

NAU Athletics Hosts 2nd Annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona athletics department will once again celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day for the second consecutive year with a celebration that will stretch over two weekends in February. The celebration will begin on Saturday, Feb. 8, with a Youth Sports Symposium in conjunction with the NAU men’s basketball game against Southern Utah that night and will continue the following weekend with a meet and greet and halftime recognition at the NAU women’s basketball game against Eastern Washington. The clinic on Feb. 8 is open to all youth, both boys and girls, in 1st-8th grade and requires pre-registration.

TUCSON, Ariz. – Christmas did not come early for the Northern Arizona men’s basketball team as they fell to the No. 1 team in the nation, UofA, by a score of 77-44. The Lumberjacks battled all throughout the game and in the second half, NAU was able to hang with the best team in the country as UofA barely outscored NAU 36-27.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona men’s basketball team will play three games this week in the Fresno State Classic in Fresno, Calif. The Lumberjacks will open up with Cal State Bakersfield on Friday at 5:30 p.m., followed by a 5:30 p.m. matchup versus Drake on Saturday. FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona men's basketball team shot 56.1 percent from the field and utilized an extremely balanced offensive effort to come out victorious in their home opener on Saturday, 83-59 over San Diego Christian. Phoenix Suns Open Training Camp on NAU Campus
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Phoenix Suns opened their 2013 training camp this morning on the campus of Northern Arizona University. This year marks the 21st time the City of Flagstaff has hosted the team’s training camp. The Suns will be practicing at the Rolle Activity Center from Tuesday through Friday with an intrasquad scrimmage at the Walkup Skydome on Saturday that is open to the public.

Phoenix Suns Return to Flagstaff for Training Camp
PHOENIX, Ariz - The Phoenix Suns make their return to Flagstaff, Ariz. for the first time since 2004 when they report for training camp at Northern Arizona University from September 30 through October 5. This year marks the 21st time the City of Flagstaff has hosted the team’s training camp. Phoenix first used Flagstaff as a training camp site in 1986, coincidentally the first training camp as a player for now Suns Head Coach Jeff Hornacek.

NAU Athletics Host Clinic at Hopi Reservation
POLACCA, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks Athletics Department may be located in Flagstaff, but every time NAU takes the field or steps out into the community, it strives to represent the greater northern Arizona area. To do that, the Lumberjacks need to reach out and make connections. On Thursday, Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Lisa Campos led several members of the NAU coaching family to the Hopi Reservation and conducted a clinic for nearly 300 elementary school children from First Mesa Elementary School and Hopi Day School.
