FRESNO, Calif. – Northern Arizona (2-6) men's basketball battled from start to finish versus Fresno State (6-3), but the Lumberjacks fell to the Bulldogs in their first overtime game of the season 71-67.
"I thought a lot of guys stepped up today," said head coach Jack Murphy. "We're not going to face many more athletic teams like Fresno State. We learned a lot about our team over these past few games. I thought we got better at attacking the paint and we didn't settle today. As we get closer to conference time, we have to come up with a rotation, so it's good to see guys stepping up."
Senior forward Max Jacobsen netted a team-high 21 points, in addition to five rebounds, as he earned all-tournament team honors. Junior swingman Gaellan Bewernick recorded the first double-double of the season for NAU with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Quinton Upshur added 11 points, while Jordyn Martin finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.
After both teams went head-to-head for the majority of the game, Fresno State's Marvelle Harris hit a pair of free throws with 5.9 seconds left in the second half to tie it up at 62-All.
NAU had a chance to win it at the buzzer, but a jumper by Kris Yanku bounced off the rim, sending the game into overtime.
Unfortunately, the Bulldogs were able to extend their lead to four and take the win.
Harris led the Bulldogs in scoring with 27 points, five rebounds and three assists. Alex Davis (13), Cezar Guerrero (12) and Allen Huddleston (12) rounded out Fresno State's top scorers.
NAU returns home on Saturday, Dec. 7 to host Hawai'i at 5 p.m. at the Walkup Skydome.
