FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona men's basketball team will begin Big Sky Conference play this week on the road. The Lumberjacks will face Montana on January 2 at 7 p.m., and then travel to Montana State on January 4 for a 7:05 p.m. tip off.
The Lumberjacks were picked to finish seventh in the media poll and ninth in the coaches' poll. Montana was slated to finish second and third, while Montana State was voted fifth and sixth.
NAU looks to prove all of its doubters wrong as it opens league play this week. The Lumberjacks finished non-conference play 3-8 with only one win on the road. Led by junior forward Quinton Upshur NAU will begin its quest for a Big Sky title under second year head coach Jack Murphy.
Breaking Down Montana
Montana has won the last three meetings. NAU is 10-34 in Missoula. The last time NAU beat UM was on Feb. 5, 2011, 70-53. The 5-4 Griz are on a four game win streak. Kareem Jamar leads UM with an average of 19.7 ppg and 6.6 rpg. The Griz are averaging 72.7 points per game as a team.
Breaking Down Montana State
Montana State has won three out of the last four meetings. NAU is 11-31 in Bozeman. The last time NAU defeated the Bobcats was Dec. 17, 2013, 87-80, in Flagstaff. MSU is on a one game win streak. Flavien Davis leads MSU with 10.2 ppg and 3.2 ppg. The Bobcats average 72.9 points per game as a team.

• Head coach Jack Murphy is in his second season at the helm of the men's basketball team.
• Max Jacobsen is the lone senior on the Lumberjack roster. He's second on the team in scoring with an average of 13.7 points per game.
