NASSAU, Bahamas – The Northern Arizona men's basketball team competed in their first game of the "Summer of Thunder" competition. The Lumberjacks topped the Commonwealth Giants 58-49 at Sir Kendal Isaacs Gym.
Rather than playing two halves, the teams played four periods. NAU never trailed as came away with the nine-point victory.
It was an all-around team effort for NAU in the win as the Lumberjacks were able to spread the ball. NAU out-rebounded the Giants 46-to-23, and led by as many as 11 points. The Lumberjacks shot 50 percent from the field, and held the Giants to 36 percent shooting.
Senior Gaellan Bewernick led the way on offense with 11 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Junior Zach Reynolds was stellar on the boards coming away with 15 rebounds, in addition to scoring eight points. Senior Quinton Upshur had six points, seven rebounds, and three steals.
NAU will play the IBA Elite on Thursday in its final game of the Summer of Thunder.
