GLENDALE, Ariz. – Grand Canyon swept doubles and picked up three singles wins to top Northern Arizona, 4-3, on Friday afternoon at the Paseo Racquet Club in Glendale. The Lumberjacks, who will play matches on Saturday and Sunday in Tucson, dropped to 2-2 on the season while Grand Canyon won its season opener.
"We struggled to start the match in doubles and couldn't rebound with enough singles victories for a win," said NAU director of tennis Kim Bruno. "We had trouble adjusting to the low altitude and Grand Canyon is a solid team. We weren't able to stay in points long enough to get the win."
The Antelopes got off to a strong start in winning all-three doubles matches. NAU junior Robin Pezzutto and sophomore Patrick Schimmelbauer were narrowly defeated by GCU's Frederic Schoelzel and Stephane Murray at No. 1, 8-7, to pace Grand Canyon to the doubles sweep.
The Lumberjacks easiest singles win came at No. 5, where freshman Dominic Bermudez posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Antelope junior Kevin Anderson. Lumberjack junior Josh Brown rallied for a 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) win over Jacob Spizman of Grand Canyon at No. 6, while Schimmelbauer won at No. 2 when his opponent retired in the third-set tiebreak. Straight set Grand Canyon wins at No. 1, 3 and 4, however, gave the Antelopes the four necessary points to clinch the victory.
Northern Arizona will face Pacific on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Tucson before battling No. 42 Arizona on Sunday.
