FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Northern Arizona won all-six singles matches in straight sets and swept doubles in a commanding 7-0 victory over Idaho State on Monday afternoon in Flagstaff Athletic Club East. The match was scheduled to be played outdoors in Glendale but was moved back to the indoor facility in Flagstaff due to rain. The Lumberjacks moved to 2-0 in conference play and 4-9 overall while the Bengals fell to 1-10 overall and 0-3 in Big Sky competition.
The match began with singles play to ensure completion, with Lumberjack sophomore Patrick Schimmelbauer getting NAU on the board first with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2. Fellow sophomore Hugo Ramadier followed suit with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph at No. 1, while junior Robin Pezzutto notched a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 3. Senior David Flodberg added a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4, while juniors Josh Brown and Ben Lantz recorded straight-set wins at No. 5 and 6, respectively, to complete a Lumberjack singles sweep.
Doubles play was able to be completed following singles actions and began with an 8-3 NAU win for Lantz and Schimmelbauer at No. 3. Brown and Ramadier held on for an 8-6 win at No. 1 while the squads waged an epic doubles contest at No. 2. Flodberg and Pezzutto played Idaho State's Danel Barrenechea and Rodrigo Azevedo into a tiebreak, with the duos battling back and forth before the NAU tandem finally emerged with a 9-8 (19-17) victory to finish the NAU sweep.
The Lumberjacks will be back in action with three road matches this weekend in northern California and Nevada, opening play on Friday at 10 a.m. at Santa Clara.
