FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team claimed the doubles point and won five singles matches for a 6-1 victory over Eastern Washington on Saturday afternoon in Flagstaff Athletic Club East. NAU moved to 4-1 in conference play and 6-10 overall while remaining undefeated at home. The Eagles dropped to 9-13 overall and 3-4 in the Big Sky.
In doubles play, Lumberjack senior David Flodberg and junior Robin Pezzutto got on the board first with an 8-1 win at No. 2. NAU would add an 8-3 win at No. 1 to clinch the doubles point while the No. 3 match moved to a tiebreak. The Eastern Washington tandem of Chris Eriksson and James Russell would outlast NAU's Ben Lantz and Patrick Schimmelbauer, 8-7 (5), to salvage a doubles win for the visitors.
Northern Arizona sophomore Hugo Ramadier was the first to finish in singles, posting a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 1. Pezzutto would cruise to a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3 while Schimmelbauer would finish off a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2. The Lumberjacks would add a 6-4, 6-2 win from Flodberg at No. 4 and a 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8) victory from junior Josh Brown at No. 6. The Eagles would get their lone point at No. 5, where Russell would outlast NAU freshman Dominic Bermudez, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5).
The Lumberjacks will play their home finale on Sunday at 2 p.m. against Weber State, with Flodberg to be honored in a pre-match ceremony before his final home competition.
