Doubles Sweep Sets the Tone in Men's Tennis Victory Over Utah State
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team swept the three doubles matches to clinch the doubles point for the first time in six matches and claimed four singles wins en route to a 5-2 victory over Utah State on Saturday. The win snapped the Lumberjacks' five-match losing streak and improved the men's record to 3-7 this season.
"The team played really well today," said assistant coach Joseph Heckley. "We got the doubles point and had a lot of confidence going into singles. They're getting better and better everyday. We went out there and competed and did what we needed to do."
The Lumberjacks hadn't taken the doubles point since their win at Northern Colorado on Feb. 11, but took care of business to begin Saturday's match against the Aggies. Sophomore Dominic Bermudez and junior Patrick Schimmelbauer got NAU's first win at No. 2, 8-3, and junior Robert Martin and senior Robin Pezzutto wrapped up the doubles point with a win at No. 3, also by an 8-3 score. The two Lumberjack pairings each played together for the second straight day this weekend and have combined to go 3-1 in doubles play thus far.
"We've been working on our doubles a lot lately and it really showed today," Heckley said. "We're trying a couple of new combinations and I think it's really working right now."
With freshman Trevor Unger and junior Shaun Waters' win at No. 1, the Lumberjacks swept all three doubles matches for the first time this season. They also improved to 3-0 this season when they claim the doubles point.
The Lumberjacks took that momentum into singles play and claimed straight-set wins at No. 4, 3 and 5 to clinch the match. Schimmelbauer's win at No. 4 was his third consecutive win, while Bermudez and Martin won for the first time this weekend. The Aggies would claim the next two singles in three-sets, but Waters finished the day on a high note for NAU with a 6-4, 6-2 win in his first match of the season at No. 2.
NAU will wrap up the weekend on Sunday when they take on UNLV at the Fertitta Tennis Complex at 11 a.m. The Rebels are 6-8 this season and have already defeated No. 73 Ball State, who knocked off the Lumberjacks on Friday, and Utah State this weekend.
