Men's Tennis Soars Over Seattle, 6-1, To Finish Season
SEATTLE, Wash. – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team defeated Seattle, 6-1, Sunday morning at the Seattle University Tennis Courts to cap off its 2012 season with a bang. The Lumberjacks finished the spring on a two-match winning streak and seniors Robin Pezzutto and Ben Lantz had perfect days in their final matches at NAU.
For the first time this season, Pezzutto and junior Robert Martin played in the top doubles spot and responded with an 8-4 victory over Flavio Malagutti and Mark Shkrebtan. The Lumberjacks then clinched the doubles point with freshman Steven Say and junior Shaun Waters' victory at No. 3 and added a win at No. 2 to complete the doubles sweep. It was the third time this season, and second time this weekend, that the Lumberjacks swept all three doubles in a single match.
Junior Patrick Schimmelbauer got NAU rolling in singles play with a two-set victory at No. 3 and Pezzutto finished off his career with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 1 against Shkrebtan. The Lumberjacks would then clinch the victory off Martin's three-set win at No. 4. Lantz and Waters also earned victories on Sunday, with Seattle claiming their only win of the day at No. 6 singles courtesy of Kyle Rapp's three-set win over Say.
Sophomore Dominic Bermudez, who did not compete in the team's regular season finale, finished the season with a team-best 12-9 singles record. Waters finished his first season at NAU with nine wins, tying him with Schimmelbauer for second on the team behind Bermudez.
The NAU pairings of Bermudez and Schimmelbauer, and Pezzutto and Martin each had a team-high six victories, while Schimmelbauer totaled 10 overall doubles victories to lead the squad.
Pezzutto and Lantz, both of whom won both their singles and doubles matches on Sunday, wrapped up their NAU careers with perfection. Pezzutto concluded his career with 35 singles wins and 43 doubles victories, while Lantz more than doubled his career singles total with five this season to finish with nine career singles victories to go along with 14 career doubles wins.
The Lumberjacks finished the 2012 season with a 6-16 record and a 2-6 Big Sky mark. They will lose just Pezzutto and Lantz from this year's squad and will return their top four players in terms of singles victories next season.
