Men's Tennis' Top Four Returners to Make Fall Debut at Balloon Fiesta
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team will be back in action this weekend at the Balloon Fiesta Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. beginning this Friday after taking a week off from fall competition. The Lumberjacks will send their top four returners to the New Mexico tournament this weekend as all four will be making their fall 2012 debuts.
"Since the first tournament (this fall), we've had a lot of good practice and they're fitter than when they came in," said director of tennis Kim Bruno. "I'm looking to see what these guys bring to the court and how we can build on last year."
Junior Dominic Bermudez, the team's No. 3 primary singles player last year, is the player to watch entering the spring 2013 season as he's coming off a stellar second season in 2012. He led the team with a 12-9 singles record and a 7-1 record against conference foes and finished his sophomore campaign with a 9-3 mark in his final 12 matches. For his performance, he was the only Lumberjack to receive all-conference honors, earning a selection to the All-Big Sky second team, the first of his career.
Bermudez will be making his fall debut this weekend along with seniors Robert Martin, Patrick Schimmelbauer and Shaun Waters. Together, the quartet served as the primary No. 2-5 players in the Lumberjack lineup last season. Waters compiled a 9-12 record as the team's primary No. 2 singles player, while Schimmelbauer posted an identical 9-12 mark playing in the No. 4 spot primarily. Martin played the majority of the season at the No. 5 position and recording a 7-15 mark last spring.
"Coming off a great season last year, we're looking for Dominic to really do something this fall," Bruno said. "This will be a great tournament for the four of them to get under their belts before we head out to Regionals. I have high expectations for these guys this year."
The three-day Balloon Fiesta tournament begins on Friday and will run through Sunday at New Mexico's Linda Estes Tennis Complex.
