LAS VEGAS, Nev. – It was a relatively quiet day for the Northern Arizona men's tennis team on Friday at the USTA/ITA Mountain Regional Championships. The Lumberjacks played just one singles match and two doubles matches on day three of the tournament as they saw senior Patrick Schimmelbauer and junior Dominic Bermudez advance to the quarterfinals of the consolation doubles bracket.
Senior Shaun Waters started the day with his eyes on the quarterfinals of the singles main draw, but fell in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, to the third-seeded player, Dmytro Mamedov of Utah in the morning. Doubles play followed with both NAU pairs in action. While sophomore Kester Black and Waters dropped their third round match to Idaho's Matt Oddonetto and Christobal Ramos, 8-5, Bermudez and Schimmelbauer got by Montana State's Kenny Dodd and Prithiv Sivasubramaniam, 8-6.
Bermudez and Schimmelbauer will aim to avenge Black and Waters' loss to the Vandal pair of Oddonetto and Ramos on Saturday when they square off in the consolation quarterfinals at 3 p.m. Should Bermudez and Schimmelbauer win, they'll then play their semifinal match at approximately 4:30 p.m.
