TUCSON, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team managed to win at No. 1 doubles but could not come away with any more victories in its season opener in a 7-0 loss to Arizona at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center Friday afternoon. The Lumberjacks fell to 0-1 on the brand new 2013 season.

"Obviously every coach wants to win, nobody wants to los 7-0, but there are a lot of good things to take away from today," said men's assistant coach Joseph Heckley. "On every court we competed and we saw some great things in both doubles and singles. For the first match of the season, I'm not that disappointed with the 7-0 loss."

The Wildcats clinched the early doubles point but it was not without a valiant effort by the Lumberjacks. At both the No. 2 and 3 spots, the Lumberjacks battled throughout the respective matches before giving way to the home team, 8-6, in both matches. In the final doubles match to end, seniors Robert Martin and Shaun Waters fought their way to a win at No. 1, defeating Fred Ask and Giacomo Miccini in a tiebreak, 8-7 (7-5).

Arizona would not let up in singles play, claiming wins at No. 5, 6, 2 and 4 in straight sets, propelling them to the team victory. Although they would eventually sweep the final two spots, Waters and junior Dominic Bermudez forced three-set matches. At the top spot, Waters held several match points in the third-set, but was edged out by Arizona's Andre Vidaller, 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (15-13), while Bermudez muscled his way back from a first-set defeat before falling, 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (10-7), to Miccini.

"I saw a lot of fight," Heckley said. "Before the match, I told the guys to compete and that's exactly what they did. Dom lost the first set and came back to win the second to force a tiebreaker and he put it all out on the court. Shaun won the first set, lost the second and had match points in the tiebreaker. It's unfortunate they didn't put it away, but they played solid tennis against a solid Pac-12 team."

The Lumberjacks are back at it in Tucson on Saturday as they look to earn a split of the weekend against Nevada at 9 a.m. The match will once again be held at the Robson Tennis Center on the Arizona campus.
