Big Sky Preseason Polls Released for Tennis

OGDEN, Utah. – With the tennis season right around the corner for the Northern Arizona men's and women's programs, the Big Sky Conference preseason polls have been released.  The NAU women's tennis team will enter the season picked to finish third in the Big Sky and the men are slotted in the eighth slot.

Women's head coach Kim Bruno looks to build off of last season's success and carry that momentum into the 2014 season. Bruno brings in five new faces into the program and will look for junior transfer Sarah Spruch, sophomore transfer Emelia Box and freshman Hailey Rochin to make an immediate impact this season. The Lumberjacks are coming off one of their best seasons in school history finishing with an overall record of 17-10 and finishing second in the Big Sky with an 8-2 record during conference play. Bruno will rely heavily on junior Johanna Vang, the top returner for Bruno's squad.  Vang played at the No. 3 singles position last season and will lead NAU this season.

In his first season at the helm for the Lumberjacks, men's tennis head coach Ki Kroll and NAU are picked to finish eighth in the Big Sky Conference after a 2013 season with very few highlights, finishing with a 4-19 record and 10th in the conference. The conference does predict a drastic improvement for the Northern Arizona men's tennis program under Kroll. The Lumberjacks have brought in six new faces to the program and Kroll expects his young players like junior transfer Jordan Gobatie and freshmen Fabio Tomasetti and Alexandre Locci to compete among the best in the Big Sky. Kroll was able to develop and become familiar with his players over the fall 2013 schedule and the former Southern Mississippi coach saw great improvements from every player who participated in tournaments during the fall.

Sacramento State was predicted to finish first in both the men's and women's preseason polls after both coming off a Big Sky Conference title. Also in both polls, Montana was picked to finish second.

The women will start off their season against Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz. on Jan. 18 while the men will begin their season on Jan. 24, when they travel to Tucson, Ariz. to take on Arizona.
