SEDONA, Ariz. – The first Northern Arizona tennis double header was a successful one for the Lumberjacks as the men's tennis team closed out the double header with a 5-0 win over North Dakota for the Lumberjacks' second straight win.
"We started off really well in doubles today," said head coach Ki Kroll. "The intensity level was really high and in singles play everyone stepped up their game. The guys know it is conference play so our level of play has risen and everyone is performing their best to their ability."
For the second straight match, the Lumberjacks were able to come away with the doubles point, giving Northern Arizona the early 1-0 lead over North Dakota. The Lumberjacks' No. 3 duo, Alan Barrios and Trevor Unger were able to come away with their second straight win in doubles with an 8-2 victory over David Bergstrom and Dustin Britton.
Clinching the doubles point for the Lumberjacks was Alexandre Locci and Jordan Gobatie at No. 2 as they took down Ryan McGuigan with an 8-2 win, which gave Northern Arizona the 1-0 lead over North Dakota.
For the second straight match, NAU was able to take the doubles point and get the early lead going to into singles play.
In singles play, Northern Arizona was able to pull out wins from the No. 1 spot, all the way down to No. 4 with only one match going to a third set. Jordan Gobatie led the Lumberjacks at No. 1 and grabbed his second straight win at No. 1 with the 6-3, 6-4 win over Josh Oothoudt.
Grabbing the first win for the Lumberjacks in singles was Kester Black with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Dustin Britton. Black is now on a two-match winning streak in singles play.
"We have been playing so well in doubles and it has just carried over into our singles play," said Black. "We have four matches this upcoming week so if we can keep winning it will just help us going into the tournament."
Fabio Tomasetti clinched the match for the Lumberjacks at the No. 4 position with the 6-3, 6-1 win over Connor Oberle.
The Lumberjacks' last win came from Locci at No. 2 with a tough three-set match against McGuigan. Locci dropped the first set to McGuigan 6-4 but Locci stormed back to take the last two sets 6-2, 10-8 to give Northern Arizona its fifth win on the day.
The Lumberjacks are now 2-2 in the Big Sky and are riding a two-match winning streak. The Lumberjacks will now rest for a day before they are back in action against in-state opponent Grand Canyon on Monday, March 17 at Continental Country Club in Flagstaff.
"Next for us is Grand Canyon and hopefully we will take the intensity from this match and play well," said Kroll.
