Men’s Tennis Closes out Regular Season with 7-0 Win

CEDAR CITY, Utah – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team was predicted to finish eighth in the Big Sky Conference this season and the Lumberjacks ended the regular season today proving the doubters wrong with a 7-0 win over Southern Utah to end the regular season with a 12-8 overall record and 7-3 record in the Big Sky.

"It is always good when you can get a win on the road," said head coach Ki Kroll. "Now we will need to take this momentum into the conference championships."

NAU did not give up a single game in their two wins in doubles to start out the match with the early 1-0 lead. Jordan Gobatie and Alexandre Locci got the Lumberjacks' first win of the day on the No. 2 court defeating Alex Dial and Ammon Story from Southern Utah 8-0. Clinching the doubles point for Northern Arizona was the No. 3 duo Alan Barrios and Kester Black. The duo was able to walk away with the 8-0 win over Branden Olcott and Mitchell John.

The Lumberjacks carried the momentum from doubles as NAU was able to handle the Thunderbirds and sweep Southern Utah in singles. SUU was only able to come away winning 15 games in the six singles matches. Gobatie got the first win for NAU in singles on the No. 2 court as Gobatie defeated Blair Robbins 6-1, 6-0. Black continues to play at a high level to close out the season as the native of Scotland won his fifth straight match in singles as he defeated Ammon Story 6-0, 6-0 to end the season with a 14-5 record in singles.

Clinching the match for the Lumberjacks was Fabio Tomasetti at the No. 3 position over Southern Utah's Alex Dial. After taking the first set 6-1, Tomasetti left no room for a comeback as he took the second set over Dial 6-2 to give the Lumberjacks their seventh win in the Big Sky.

With the win, Northern Arizona puts themselves in a position to move into third depending on the results of Montana State's match against Montana tomorrow. Last season, the Northern Arizona men's tennis team ended the season with a 1-9 record in the Big Sky and Kroll has completely turned this program around as NAU is now on a five-match winning streak heading into the Big Sky Championships next week in Sacramento, Calif.

The Lumberjacks will head back to Flagstaff before the Big Sky Championships at Sacramento State on April 25-27.
