OGDEN, Utah – Sophomore Tim Handel was named Big Sky Player of the Week for the second time this season. In his second season in blue and gold, Handel has accumulated 14 singles wins and 10 doubles wins with former Big Sky Player of the Week Ruben Montano. The Reutlingen, Germany native is ranked No. 13 in the region and has garnered his third career Big Sky Player of the Week honor at the No. 1 position for the Lumberjacks.
Handel leads the team in the win column, already surpassing his 13 singles wins and 9 doubles wins from last season. This last weekend, Handel competed against Portland State Saturday, April 8 winning in singles and going unfinished in doubles. The Lumberjacks clinched the doubles point before Handel and Montano could finish their 5-3 lead over Nathan Boniel and Tommy Edwards. In singles, Handel defeated Boniel 6-2, 6-4 to help the 'Jacks sweep the Vikings 7-0.
The following day, Handel and the Lumberjacks picked up another 7-0 sweep over Eastern Washington. In doubles, Handel and Montano paired to defeat the Eagles' Robert Dula and Victor Pereira 6-3 to help the Lumberjacks clinch the doubles point. Handel went on to beat Dula 6-2, 6-7(1), 10-5 in singles. Handel dropped a close set before winning on his court, but he was able to win the ten-point tiebreak to give the blue and gold their seventh point of the match.
Handel earned his first career Big Sky Player of the Week honor last season and has already received two so far this season. Handel and the Lumberjacks already clinched a spot in the Big Sky Conference tournament and currently sit in first place going into their final weekend of regular season competition. Northern Arizona will first face North Dakota Friday, April 14 at noon before traveling to compete against Northern Colorado Sunday, April 16 at 10 a.m.
