OGDEN, Utah – The first 2017 Big Sky Conference Athletes of the Week were released today, with Northern Arizona's Brooke Andersen claiming the women's field honors for her efforts at last weekend's Friday Night Duels.
Andersen, entering her redshirt-junior season indoors, muscled a 66-9.75 (20.36m) throw on her first competitive attempt of the season—setting a new weight throw school record in the process. That mark sling shot her past alumnus Lauren Stuart and moved her into fifth-place on the conference's all-time rankings. Additionally, Andersen now ranks seventh in the NCAA this season in the weight throw event.
"Everything was just absolutely clicking today," said Andersen, following her competition Friday. "It all came together when I needed it to, and I was able to get the mark I did. It was also a new school record, which is awesome."
Andersen went onto win the event Friday, marking her fourth career individual victory in the weight throw and her 12th first-place victory overall (four in the weight, eight in the hammer).
Andersen and the Lumberjacks are back in action this Saturday, Jan. 21, in the Walkup Skydome for the Lumberjack Team Challenge. Field events are slated to being at 8 a.m. MT, while events on the track will get underway at 10:30 a.m. MT.
