OGDEN, Utah – Northern Arizona University's Matt Baxter climbed to eighth all-time in the conference records books with a 13:46.24 time in the 5000-meter run at Stanford University's Cardinal Classic over the weekend and garnered the Big Sky's "Men's Track Athlete of the Week" honor because of it.
Running in the first section of the men's 5K on the Cobb Track Friday night, Baxter checked in with the seventh-best time out of the 35 that were recorded and missed out on a personal-best by two seconds. Baxter, who was a second-team NCAA All-American during the indoor season in the 5K event, now ranks 15th in the west region and 17th nationally.
Friday's race was not the first of the season for Baxter on Cobb Track, though, as the redshirt-junior from New Plymouth, New Zealand, also competed earlier this outdoor campaign at the Stanford Invitational. At that meet, Baxter ran in the men's 10,000m event and finished 17th with a 28:48.02 time. Currently, he ranks No. 7 in the west and No. 15 in the nation in the 10K.
Additionally, on the Big Sky's 2017 performance list, Baxter is a top-five athlete in three different event categories: 1500m (No. 4), 5K (No. 2) and 10K (No. 1).
