Women’s Golf Leads Season Opening Tournament

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Northern Arizona University women’s golf team had a successful opening day of the 2009-10 season, posting an eight-stroke lead after 36 holes of the Bulldog and Eagle Invitational hosted by Gonzaga.

NAU shot 307 in the opening round to take an early one-stroke lead after 18 holes and extended the lead to eight strokes after a tournament-best 297 in the second round.

“It was a long day but we came back and played better in the afternoon,” said Head Coach Brad Bedortha. “Our spirits are high after today. Our goal was to be competitive and we are in position to win.”

NAU placed all five players among the top 20 in the field after 36 holes. Juniors Bethany Leclair and Alexa Kim are in a three-way tie for fourth overall six-over par scores of 150. Leclair went 74-76 over the two rounds on Monday, while Kim posted the low round of the day with a two-under par 70 in the second round after an opening round 80.

Senior Megan Buck is tied for 12th at 153, while true freshmen Aleah Kim and Stephanie Kim are tied for 16th overall one stroke back at 154 after their first two collegiate rounds.

NAU leads Big Sky Conference rival Montana by eight strokes. Cal State Northridge (614), host Gonzaga (616) and Southern Utah (623) round out the top five teams in the field.

The third and final round will be contested Tuesday at the Hangman Valley Golf Course. NAU will be seeking the 24th team tournament title in school history and just the third season-opening tournament win. The Lumberjacks have opened a season with a win in both 1998 and 2008.
