Women’s Golf Sets Single Round Record, Leads at Grand Canyon Invite

GOODYEAR, Ariz. - The Northern Arizona women's golf team shattered the team individual round school record with a three-under par 285 in the first round of the Grand Canyon Women's Fall Invitational held at Coldwater Golf Course in Goodyear, Ariz. NAU reset the record of 291 set at the Lumberjack Invitational in 2002.

"I thought we had a chance to shoot a real good score," said Head Coach Brad Bedortha. "We played really well on the back nine and some putts starting dropping. The confidence of the team started going up. It was real fun to watch."

Junior Alexa Kim led the record-breaking day with a three-under par 69, tying the individual single record accomplished three previous times in school history. Kim was one of three Lumberjacks with under-par rounds. Freshman Stephanie Kim and senior Megan Buck both carded one-under par 71s.

"Alexa played great today," said Bedortha. "She made two birdies coming home to tie the school record. She struggled with her putting last week. It was great to watch her bounce back today."

Senior Meghan Bremer recorded a two-over par 74, while Aleah Kim had a four-over par 76. Dakin Banta and Lauren Halstead, both playing as individuals, had solid days with 73 and 74, respectively.

NAU leads host Grand Canton by eight strokes entering the second and final round on Tuesday.

The Lumberjacks are seeking their fourth consecutive overall regular season title and a school-record third straight to open the 2009-10 season.
