Women’s Golf Wins Third Tournament in a Row, Stephanie Kim Wins Title

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona women’s golf team won the Grand Canyon Women's Fall Invitational held at Coldwater Golf Course in Goodyear, Ariz. The Lumberjacks won by 14 strokes after posting a 295 Tuesday, winning their fourth consecutive overall regular season title and a school-record third straight to open the 2009-10 season.

“We set out with the goal to win today and we accomplished it,” said Head Coach Brad Bedortha. “Everyone is real happy. It was really fun to watch.”

True freshman Stephanie Kim, who was playing in just her third collegiate tournament, claimed medalist honors in the event with rounds of 71-71 to post a one-stroke victory over Charlotte Guilleux of Wayland Baptist and teammates Alexa Kim and Dakin Banta.
Kim shot a 74 Tuesday after tying the single round school record with a three-under par 69 on Monday. Banta, playing as an individual, carded a collegiate-best two-under par 70 to jump into a tie for second overall.

“It was a great performance to come out and play that way to day,” said Bedortha of the performance by Stephanie Kim. “It was huge. We need her to play like that for us to be successful.”

Kim is the ninth player in school history to win a tournament title and first freshman to win a title since Sophia Choi won the Big Sky Conference Championship in 2005. Overall, five freshmen have now won titles including Eleanor Pilgram, Louise Davis, Amber Ward and Choi. It is the 19th individual tournament title won by a Lumberjack.

NAU shattered the team individual round school record with a three-under par 285 Monday in the first round to build an eight stroke lead, finishing with a two-day total of 580 to break the two-round mark of 584 set at the 1998 Lumberjack Invitational. The previous single-round record was 291 set at the 2002 Lumberjack Invitational.

Seniors Megan Buck and Meghan Bremer both recorded three-over par rounds of 75, finishing 9th and 16th overall. Senior Lauren Halstead tied for 23rd overall.

NAU will return to action at the Prices Give 'Em Five Invitational in Las Crucus, N.M. Oct. 12-14.
