Golfer Buck Leads Mountain Shootout; Lumberjacks One Back in Team Standings

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Senior Megan Buck posted a two-over par 74 to lead the Northern Arizona women’s golf team after the first round of the Mountain Shootout held at Flagstaff Ranch Monday.

“It was a really good day for me today,” said Buck after the round. “I did a good job of staying out of trouble. On this golf course that is really the most important thing because every hole is lined with trees. I putted well and overall it was just a solid day.”

Buck is the individual co-leader with North Dakota State’s Amy Anderson at two-over par 74. Seven players are within three strokes of the lead, including senior Meghan Bremer, who carded a five-over par 77 and tied for seventh overall as a late replacement for Bethany Leclair.

Buck will be competing for her first collegiate title Tuesday, while Anderson is looking for her third consecutive victory this season. Anderson, a 17-year-old freshman from Oxbow, N.D., has won her first two collegiate tournaments this fall, capturing the medalist honors at the Nebraska Chip-N Club Invitational and the Concordia Cobber Open. She also won the 2009 U.S. Junior Girls Amateur championship this past summer.

The Lumberjacks shot a team score of 311, finishing one stroke behind Southern Utah (310) and three strokes ahead of Utah Valley (313) and five ahead of Grand Canyon (315) and North Dakota State.

“Everyone was a little nervous today,” said Buck. “We did not have our best effort as a team. Everyone is going shoot low scores tomorrow.”

Junior Alexa Kim is tied for 10th overall after a round of six-over par 78, while freshmen Stephanie Kim and Aleah Kim both had rounds of 10-over par 82.

“We did not play as well as we would have liked today,” said Head Coach Brad Bedortha. “We have our work cut out for us. They have to show up and play well to win.”

Senior Lauren Halstead and junior Dakin Banta both played as individuals, shooting 84 and 85 respectively.

The second and final round will be played Tuesday with tee times starting at 8:30 a.m. on the Flagstaff Ranch layout.
