FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Tucson Catalina Foothills product Laura Jabczenski and Columbian standout Susana Mejia have signed a National Letter-of-Intent to attend Northern Arizona University and play golf, Head Coach Brad Bedortha announced on Wednesday.
"I think both players have the ability to come in and play for us immediately," said Head Coach Brad Bedortha. "We will need them to compete for us."
Jabczenski was a two-time Arizona State champion at Catalina Foothills High School for coach Mark Polich. She was named the Arizona Daily Star 2009 and was selected to the Arizona Republic's 2009 All-State team. She set nine Catalina Foothills school records including lowest scoring average and was chosen to represent Arizona at the Mary Cave Cup.
"We are very happy to sign Laura," said Bedortha. "She is a two-time state champion. She has a great personality and attitude and has excellent interaction with her teammates. I think she is going to be awesome for us."
She recently won the 2010 Arizona State Division II medalist honors, the seventh player from Southern Arizona to win a championship and the second to finish with back-to-back titles. She shot a five-over 145 with rounds of 71 and 74, helping her school win their second consecutive state championship. She follows her sister, Heather, who played at NAU from 2003-07 and was selected to the National Golf Coaches Association All-Scholar team.
Mejia attended Montemayour Sagrado Corazon and has won six tournaments in Columbia, while pacing second in four others. She has earned several top-five finishes at national tournaments and was been ranked No. 1 in the state rankings for the last four years and seventh in the Columbian Federation Junior Golf Rankings.
"She has the ability to be a very good golfer and has shown the skills to be a successful player," said Bedortha. "I saw her play in Florida this summer and really liked her game."
She finished 30th at the Optimist Junior International held in West Palm Beach, Fla., in August.
