Women’s Golf Wins Second Title of the Season; Alexa Kim Takes Title

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. – The Northern Arizona women's golf team, which started the day six strokes behind first-round leader UC Riverside, carded a final-round 302 total to capture the team title by three strokes over Fresno State. Long Beach State finished third at 617, followed by Cal State Northridge (625) and UC Riverside (628).

"To come back the way we did today and finish off the fall with two wins was big," said Head Coach Brad Bedortha. "It was great for our team and their confidence heading into the spring. The outlook looks very good and the girls are ecstatic."

Alexa Kim, one of four golfers to match par in the final round, carded four bogeys and an equal number of birdies to jump from 13th place into the lead. She captured the individual title with a birdie on the 36th and final hole on Tuesday, carding an even-par 73 to win by one stroke. It was the first career title for the Chandler, Ariz., native. She had finished runner-up two times in her career at the 2009 Big Sky Championship and 2009 Grand Canyon Fall Invitational.

"She had a great day today," said Bedortha. "She had real good composure and her attitude was unbelievable. She did a great job and hit some quality shots."

The Lumberjacks placed three players in the top 10. Sophomore Stephanie Kim and freshman Kaitlen Parsons both posted three-over par rounds of 76, tying for fifth overall in the individual standings. Senior Dakin Whitmer posted a four-over par 77 to finish tied for 26th overall. Catherine Benscoter had a 91 in the final round.

The Lumberjacks return action on Feb. 7 at the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson.
