Northern Arizona’s Kim Named Black Clover Golfer of the Week

OGDEN, Utah - Northern Arizona’s Stephanie Kim has been selected as the Black Clover Big Sky Conference Golfer of the Week after tying for fourth place at the Hilton Garden Inn Mountain Shootout.

Kim, from Tempe, Ariz., opened with an even-par 72 in Monday’s first round, and followed with a 79 to finish with a seven-over-par 171. Kim, the 2010 Big Sky Player of the Year and reigning Big Sky Champion, helped NAU to a third-place finish. The tournament was held at the Forest Highlands Golf Club in Flagstaff.

Grand Canyon won the tournament with a 610. Northern Arizona shot rounds of 310-325 for a 635. Brittany Penny of Grand Canyon claimed medalist honors with a 146 (76-70).

This is Kim’s third career Player of the Week award.

Around the Big Sky

Montana finished fifth in the 12-team Washington State Cougar Cup, played Monday-Wednesday at Palouse Ridge in Pullman, Wash. Montana shot a 54-hole score of 929. Washington State won the tourney with a 917. Montana senior Carissa Simmons tied for ninth with a 299.

Montana State finished 9th, followed by Sacramento State in 10th. Eastern Washington was 11th. Justine Chen and Samantha Saffold both tied for 22nd to lead Sacramento State. Eastern Washington’s Kellie Holmstedt also tied for 22nd. Montana State’s Kelly O’Brien tied for 26th.

DID YOU KNOW…Overall, 26 student-athletes earned a 4.0 GPA for the 2010 spring semester, representing all 15 squads. The soccer team led the department with seven student-athletes with a 4.0 GPA for the semester.
