Women’s Golfers Qualify for 2011 U.S Women’s Amateur Public Links

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Rising junior Stephanie Kim and sophomore Kaitlen Parsons both qualified for the 2011 U.S Women's Amateur Public Links at sectional qualifiers on June 6. The WAPL will be held at Bandon Dunes in Bend, Ore., June 27-July 2.

"It will be an awesome experience for them playing in a USGA championships event," said Head Coach Brad Bedortha. "They are playing at probably the top resort in America."

Kim shot a one-over par 73 at the Ocotillo Golf Resort in Chandler to finish third behind Alex Stewart of Peoria and Cheyenne Woods of Phoenix, the niece of PGA star Tiger Woods. Kim was one of five players to advance out of the Phoenix sectional.

Kim, who played in the 2010 U.S, Women's Amateur, will be playing in her first Public Links after failing to advance out of sectional qualifying last summer. She recently completed her sophomore season, earning All-Big Sky first-team selection and Big Sky Player of the Year honors for the second consecutive season. The former Desert Vista High School standout broke own school record for scoring average with 75.3 per round average in 2010-11.

Kim is also playing in the Women's Trans National July 26-31 in Sheridan, Wyo.

Parsons was tied for third in her sectional after a 77 at the Classic Golf Course in Spanaway, Wash., advancing to her first U.S Women's Amateur Public Links.

Parsons, who is from Greenacres, Wash., posted a 77.1 stroke average, the fourth-best total on the team, in her freshman season. She was the top freshman at the Big Sky Conference Championships, tying for ninth at 226 with rounds of 75-75-76. She had season-best finish at the Circling Raven Collegiate in first college tournament, tying for second overall with rounds of  71-75-73.

Sophomore Jessie Joachim failed to advance by two strokes after posting a 79 at a sectional in Colorado. Incoming freshman Melissa Olson also failed to qualify with a 91.

The field includes 156 qualifiers with the top 64 advancing to match play after two rounds.
