SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Junior golfer Stephanie Kim leads the Lamkin Grip/Cal Poly Invitational after the first round by shooting a one-over par 74, posting a two-stroke advantage after the first 18 holes.
"Stephanie hit a lot of very good golf shots today," said Head Coach Brad Bedortha. "She handled herself great. It was good for her to get back to playing that way."
Northern Arizona is tied for fourth place with Cal-State Northridge and Weber State at 326. Santa Clara leads the tournament after posting a 319. Host Cal Poly and Grand Canyon are four strokes back in a tie for second at 323.
"It could be a wild finish for sure," said Bedortha. "You get a couple good scores in there and see what happens. We are not out of it by any means."
Kim carded a two-over par 38 over the first nine holes before finishing with an even-par 36 over the final nine holes to lead the tournament. Sophomore Kaitlen Parsons is tied for 16th after carding an 82. Freshman Laura Jabczenski is tied for 36th after an 82, while classmate Melissa Olson is tied for 52nd. She recorded an 86 in the first round.
NAU is the defending champion at the event. Former Lumberkack Alexa Kim won the individual title in 2010 with rounds of 77 and 73. Stephanie Kim tied for fifth at the event last season and tied for third during her freshman season in 2009.
