Women’s Golf Inks Three for 2012

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona women's golf team has signed three student-athletes to join the team in the fall, Head Coach Brad Bedortha announced. The 2012 recruiting class includes Savana Bezdicek from Mt. Spokane High School in Colbert, Wash., India Matthews from Queensland, Australia and Darian Spivey from Mountain Pointe High School in Chandler, Ariz.

"We have added some depth to our roster and they make us more competitive within our team," said Bedortha."

Bezdicek won the 2010 Washington 3A state championship (71-74) and helped her team to a second-place finish in 2011, the highest in school history. She was the first individual golf state champion in school history and finished ninth in 2011. She received the Joanne Teats Inspirational Award from the Washington Junior Golf Association. She shot a personal best 66 at regionals in 2010, setting the course record.

"Savana is a really good student who comes down to the Valley to practice and play in the winter," said Bedortha. "I think she will do great things here. She is a very good golfer, has a wonderful personality and will be a great addition to our program. "

Mathews is ranked 35th in the Australian National Girls rankings and 97th overall in the country. She is a three-time qualifier for the Greg Norman Junior Masters. She won the PIS Charity Day Pro-Am and played in the Australian Amateur and Junior Girls Championships, finishing 58th and 54th, respectively.

"I liked what I have seen from India on video and she is excited to come to the United States to play," said Bedortha. "I think she will be a great addition to the squad."

Spivey is a three-time most valuable player at Mountain Pointe. She won the Tempe City and Tempe Invitational championships. She played for the Arizona Team in the Junior America's Cup in Genoa Lakes, Nevada, placing 13th as a team and 52nd overall. She helped her team qualify for state championships in 2011, finishing seventh as an individual. The Chandler, Ariz., native was fourth at the State Junior Golf Championships held at Forrest Highlands Golf Club last summer.

"Darian plays very in control," said Bedortha. "She is a great putter and manages her game very well. I can see she is going to get better and better. It is fun watching her progress and has a great work ethic."
