TUCSON, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona women's golf team finished in 14th place at the Wildcat Invitational to open the 2012 spring campaign. The Lumberjacks shot a 330 in the final round for a three-round total of 975.
"We were hoping to play better than we fared in the tournament," said Head Coach Brad Bedortha. "The conditions were pretty tough today. Kaitlen Parsons and Laura Jabczenski played well for us today."
Host Arizona won the team title by 12 strokes over UCLA, the only two teams under par for the tournament. Arizona State was third followed by Colorado and Oregon State to round out the top five.
Sophomore Kaitlen Parsons led the Lumberjacks in the tournament, finishing tied for 36th overall with a three-day total of 232. She carded a seven-over 79 for the second consecutive day after opening the tournament with a 74 in the first round.
"Overall Kaitlen had a good tournament," said Bedortha. "She grinded it out to shoot 79 in her last two rounds and finished with a birdie today. She expects to play better than that but it was a good start to her semester."
Junior Stephanie Kim tied for 56th overall after an 85 in the final round. Freshman Laura Jabczenski, who was playing in her hometown of Tucson, had a 79 in the third round to move up to 67th overall at 248.
Freshman Susana Mejia shot an 87, while classmate Melissa Olson had an 89 in the final round. Freshman Darian Spivey finished her collegiate debut with an 87 while playing as an individual in the tournament.
"We have three weeks before our home tournament so we have plenty of time to work some things out," said Bedortha. "It is good to get some things out of our system. It will be good to get back on our home course and get some practice in before our home tournament."
NAU plays host to the Red Rocks Invitational March 3-4 at Oakcreek Country Club in Sedona.
