Kim Ties for Fifth to Lead Women’s Golf at Red Rocks

SEDONA, Ariz. – Junior Stephanie Kim shot a three-over par 75 to finish in a tie for fifth overall at the Red Rocks Invitational held at Oakcreek Country Club in Sedona Sunday.  She posted rounds of 77-75 to total eight-over par 152 for the two-day event.

"It is a huge confidence builder for her," said Head Coach Brad Bedortha. "She needed that."

Kim was the top Lumberjack in the field, five strokes behind individual champion Caitlin McCleary of Seattle who also carded a 75. McCleary opened with a tournament-best even-par 72 and won by three strokes over Dana Zamprell of Wyoming and Meredith Fairbairn of Eastern Michigan.

Eastern Michigan won the team title by 14 strokes with a tournament-best 298 on Sunday to finish with a two-day total of 603. Seattle was second at 617, while Xavier placed third at 619. Grand Canyon was fourth at 621 followed by NAU at 632.

NAU finished ahead of Big Sky competitors Montana State, Northern Colorado, Weber State, Montana and Eastern Washington.

Freshman Laura Jabczenski had a solid tournament at 14-over par, finishing tied for 24th overall at 158. She recorded rounds of 78 and 80. Freshman Susana Mejia was four strokes back at 162 after an 83 on Sunday.

Sophomore Kaitlen Parsons improved six strokes in the second round with a seven-over par 79 to tie for 55th overall. Freshman Darian Spivey was 11 strokes better with a 79. Freshman Melissa Olson had an 82 playing as an individual.

"Overall it was a lot better tournament for us," said Bedortha. "We competed better and I feel good that we continue to makes steps in the right direction. Kaitlen played better today and Darian played well and her confidence is better. There are still the little things to work on."

The Lumberjacks are back in action again next weekend at the Rio Verde Invitational.
