Freshman Jabczenski Leads Women’s Golf in First Round at Rio Verde Invite

RIO VERDE, Ariz. – Freshman Laura Jabczenski shot a five-over par 76 to lead the Northern Arizona women's golf team at the Rio Verde Invitational Friday after first round action.

"Laura played solid and hit it real good," said Head Coach Brad Bedortha. "She made some putts and got it around the golf course. It was good to see her post a good score."

The wind was a heavy factor in the first round, gusting at 20-30 miles per hour during the round.

"It was a tough day to play golf," said Bedortha. "We did not play that bad and I do not think our score was indicative of our play. We competed well today."

NAU is tied for 12th overall in the team standings after a 321 in the first round. Akron leads the tournament by one stroke after a 305 over Missouri State and Eastern Michigan. Texas A&M Corpus Christi and Penn State are four strokes back at 309.

Jabczenski posted a five-over 76, the third-best round of the season in relation to par for the freshman from Tucson, Ariz.  Her round featured 12 pars, one birdie and one double bogey on the day.  She is tied for eighth overall.

Sophomore Kaitlen Parsons carded an 81 in the first round that was hurt by two double bogeys and a triple. Junior Stephanie Kim had an 82 that included a nine on the par-four eighth hole.

Freshman Darian Spivey also had an 82 in the first round, while classmate Susana Mejia recorded an 85.

The second round will be played on Saturday beginning with a shotgun start.
