Parsons Shoots 70; Women’s Golf Vaults to Seventh at Cowgirl Classic

CHANDLER, Ariz. – Sophomore Kaitlen Parsons tied her collegiate-best round with a two-under par 70 to help the Northern Arizona women's golf team post a 294 Tuesday and move into seventh at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic.

"Today was huge," said Head Coach Brad Bedortha. "We preach that we can be competitive if we play well. We went out and did it, showing we have the ability to play this way. It was a huge step forward."

The 294 was a season-best for the Lumberjacks by 11 strokes, tying for the 11th-best round in school history. NAU jumped seven spots in the team standings with a two-day total of 603 and trail third-place Portland State by six strokes. Colorado State leads the team standings by six strokes over Iowa State. Wichita State (600), UTEP (601) and Xavier (602) are within three strokes.

Parsons round of 70 tied her career-best set at the Lumberjack Shootout at Wigwam last season and tied the ninth-best single round score in school history. The round vaulted her into a group of six players tied for fifth at three-over par 143 after two rounds. She posted two birdies and one bogey on each side to card identical scores of one-over par 35 Tuesday.

"She has been working hard on different aspects of her game and it was great for her to get that feeling again of playing good golf," said Bedortha. "It was a huge confidence builder for her."

Freshman Laura Jabczenski improved her collegiate-best score by two strokes with her first round under par, carding a one-under par 71. The Tucson, Ariz., native had a single bogey on her first nine holes before finishing with a two-under par 34 on the second nine helped by three birdies. She is in a tie for 22nd at 150 after a 79 in the first round and has played the last 27 holes in one-under par.

"She told me she was making a comeback," said Bedortha. "She started getting her grove and moved forward from there."

Junior Stephanie Kim recorded a three-over par 75, while freshman Susana Mejia had a 78 to notch her season-best. Teammate Melissa Olson was one stroke back with a 79.

"Stephanie is very close to clicking on all cylinders," said Bedortha.

The third and final round will be contested on Wednesday.
