Women’s Golf Finishes Second at The Lumberjack at Ocotillo

CHANDLER, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona women's golf team posted four rounds in the 70s to finish second at The Lumberjack at Ocotillo held at the Ocotillo Golf Resort.

"We were more consistent top to bottom today, which is a good thing," said Head Coach Brad Bedortha. "There is still a world of improvement that needs to happen before the conference tournament. But, there were some good things I saw and areas we need to work on to perform better."

Senior Stephanie Kim and freshman Savana Bezdicek both tied for seventh at 16-over par 232 to lead the Lumberjack effort. Kim posted rounds of 80 and back-to-back rounds of four-over par 76 to close the tournament, while Bezdicek opened with two rounds of five-over 77 before posting a six-over par 78 in the third round.

"We could have started a little better," said Kim. "Everyone did their best so that is all we can ask for right now. We have five more tournaments coming up starting with our home tournament. Hopefully, we can do better in Sedona."

Junior Kaitlen Parsons and sophomores Melissa Olson and Darian Spivey each recorded a six-over par 78 in the final round.

Susana Mejia posted a five-over par round of 77, while Laura Jabczenski had an 88. Both players were playing as individuals in this tournament.

McNeese State claimed the team title with a 303 in the final round to finish 27 strokes ahead of the field with a three-day total of 914. NAU was second at 941 and Weber State at 949. Kelsey Chugg of Weber State posted the come-from-behind victory after posting a tournament-low round of two-under par 70 to edge McNeese State teammates Kelsey Haynie and Lina Lagergren by two strokes. Sadie Palmer of Southern Utah was also tied for second at 11-over par 227.

"They will continue to improve," said Bedortha. "At the end of the day I had higher hopes for our play and performance. I am still very optimistic about this team, how well we can play and how good we can be."

The Lumberjacks return to action March 2-3 when the team hosts the Red Rocks Invitational at the Oakcreek Country Club in Sedona.
