Freshman Bezdicek Earns Top 10 Finish at Red Rocks Invitational

SEDONA, Ariz. – Freshman Savana Bezdicek posted back-to-back rounds of three-over par 75 to record a tie for sixth place at the Red Rocks Invitational at Oakcreek Country Club Sunday.

"She has been playing very well," said Head Coach Brad Bedortha. "This is not a golf course that sets up very well for her because she does not get to hit her driver. She always seems to find a way to get around the golf course no matter where she is at. For her to play the way she did is awesome."

Bezdicek helped the Lumberjacks to a seventh-place finish as a team after rounds of 311-310 to finish one stroke back of Western Michigan and just nine back of third overall. Toledo won the team title by four strokes with a 301 in the second round to edge Cal-State Northridge.

"I did not make many putts for birdies but I was getting up and down," said Bezdicek, who recorded her fourth top-10 finish in six events this season. "My scrambling was the highlight for me today."

Junior Kaitlen Parsons was tied for 12th one stroke back at 151 with rounds of 76-75, equaling the best round of the day for the team.

"She stepped up," said Bedortha of Parsons. "She has never played that great here (in two previous tournaments). She proved to herself that she can play on the golf course. She played great."

Senior Stephanie Kim improved two strokes with a five-over par 77 for a two-day total of 156 to tie for 31st overall. Sophomores Melissa Olson and Darian Spivey each carded an 83 in the final round and tied overall in the standings at 72nd.

Laura Jabczenski and Susana Mejia played as individuals in this event, posting scores of 82 and 83, respectively, in the final round.

"Talking to everybody they all had things they wanted to work on or things that just did not go well for them," said Parsons. "That's golf. We are going to keep working and progressing for conference."

The Lumberjacks will play again next weekend with a three-day tournament at the Rio Verde Invitational hosted by Western Michigan in Rio Verde, Ariz., starting Friday, March 8.

"We still have room for improvement and we know what we need to work on," said Bezdicek. "We can move forward and play better from here on out."
