Golf Records Best Round of the Week to Close Cowgirl Classic

CHANDLER, Ariz. – The NAU golf team closed its regular season on a positive note Wednesday, posting a 308 team score for its best round of the week and tying for sixth place among 19 teams after the final day of the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in Chandler.

"We definitely played better," head coach Brad Bedortha said. "Stephanie Kim played well and Savana Bezdicek played better and that's an improvement to where we need to be going. We didn't go over the top in this tournament before the conference so hopefully we have plenty of room to improve before the conference championship."

Boise State led wire-to-wire to capture the Cowgirl Classic crown while Big Sky foe Portland State finished third and Montana tied NAU for sixth place with a 939 total. Wednesday's 308 team score was NAU's best in six rounds this season over two tournaments held at the Ocotillo Golf Resort, which will be the host course for the Big Sky Championship starting April 21.

"They set the course up a little bit differently and the weather was good today," Bedortha said. "Now that we've played the course twice we know what shots we need to hit so we can focus on that stuff. We played better but we still aren't quite firing on all cylinders right now and we'll have to play better in the conference championship. "

Kim carded NAU's best round of the tournament on Wednesday with a one-over par 73 as she recorded two birdies and just three bogeys. Bezdicek rebounded from tough rounds on Monday and Tuesday with a five-over par 77 on Wednesday with a pair of birdies of her own as she improved 10 stokes from her Monday round.

Junior Kaitlen Parsons completed a solid tournament with a 79 on Wednesday to finish tied for 14th overall with a 231 total for the week. Sophomore Susana Mejia also shot a 79 Wednesday while sophomore Darian Spivey posted an 81 to round out NAU's scorers. Playing as an individual, sophomore Melissa Olson concluded her tournament with an 86 Wednesday.

With the regular season complete, the Lumberjacks set their sights on the Big Sky Championship, which they will host April 21-23 back at the Ocotillo Golf Resort.
