Kim Shoots 72, NAU tied for 18th at NCAA Golf Regional

STANFORD, Calif. – Senior Stephanie Kim carded a one-over par 72, the best round a Lumberjack has ever shot in NCAA Regional play, and is tied for 15th place after the first day of the NCAA West Regional at the Stanford Golf Course. As a team the Lumberjacks shot a 307 and are tied for 18th with the University of Miami.

"I'm very proud of the effort today; we played really solidly," NAU head coach Brad Bedortha said. "Stephanie played great all day and was very comfortable and confident in what she was doing. We played competitive golf; we have a good team and we proved that we can play some good golf so it was nice."

Seeded 22nd out of 24 teams in the region, NAU is ahead of five teams, including national top-50 squads Florida State and UNLV, after the first of three days of competition. The team has never had a player finish higher than 30th place at the NCAA Regional as Kim is tied for 15th after her first round.

With the Lumberjacks starting on the 10th hole, Kim made par on her first eight holes before a bogey on 18. She rebounded with birdies on the first and third holes and remained at even par until ending her round with a bogey on the ninth hole to finish at +1 on the day.

"I started pretty solid making pars on the first eight holes; I was hitting fairways and greens and two putting and it's always nice to start out that way," Kim said. "I made the turn and went a little up and down but I made some good birdie putts after bogey holes so that was good to come back with. It was just really fun out there and I hit the ball well today."

Junior Kaitlen Parsons had a solid first nine holes with a pair of birdies and stood at +2 at the turn. She then birdied the second hole and was -1 through six holes on the front nine before a pair of bogeys to end her round with a +3 75 to sit in a tie for 36th place overall.

Sophomore Darian Spivey shot an 80 and is tied for 96th place and sophomore Susana Mejia played even-par golf over her last seven holes with a pair of birdies and finished with an 81. Savana Bezdicek, the Big Sky Freshman of the Year, rounded out the Lumberjacks with an 86.

After playing in the final groupings of the day on Thursday the Lumberjacks will get an earlier start on Friday teeing off at 8:25 a.m.

"We played solid and I'd love to go out and have another nice day tomorrow," Bedortha said. "We're out earlier tomorrow and I think the golf course is playing harder in the afternoon as the wind was blowing pretty hard today. Hopefully we can get off to a decent start (tomorrow) and get some good mojo going from the get-go and hope to post another good round."
