Kim Finishes Tied for 14th, NAU 22nd at NCAA Golf Regional

STANFORD, Calif. – Senior Stephanie Kim concluded her superb Lumberjack career with a 74 on Saturday and finished tied for 14th at the NCAA Golf West Regional at Stanford. No Lumberjack had ever finished higher than 30th at the NCAA Regionals while Kim's three-day total of 217 was five strokes better than any Lumberjack had previously finished in NCAA play.

As a team the Lumberjacks were three strokes better on Saturday than they were on Friday and had a three-day total of 940 to place 22nd, finishing ahead of North Dakota State and Long Island at the regional.

"We had another awesome round from Stephanie and to play as well as she did for the whole tournament was great," NAU head coach Brad Bedortha said. "We finished where we were seeded but we could have been closer to a lot of teams if we had played more like we were capable of playing."

Kim concluded the regional as she started it with consistent and steady play. After opening with a bogey on 10 Kim birdied 14 before bogeys on 15 and 17 to make the turn at +2. The senior than recorded pars on eight consecutive holes before ending her regional tournament with a bogey to finish at +3 for the day and just +4 for the tournament.

Only 13 players in the region had a better three-day total than Kim as she finished ahead of more than 100 of the best golfers in the country. Her 217 total was five strokes better than former Lumberjack Ali Carter's 222 at NAU's last NCAA Regional appearance in 2009 as Kim closed her stellar collegiate career with the program's best NCAA performance.

Junior Kaitlen Parsons rebounded from a tough round on Friday to shoot a solid 76 on Saturday highlighted by a birdie on the fifth and 13 par holes. Big Sky Freshman of the Year Savana Bezdicek had her best round at Stanford on Saturday as she was just +3 through her first eight holes and closed her rookie season with an 82.

Sophomore Darian Spivey had nine pars and shot an 83 in round three and sophomore Susana Mejia had a birdie on her second to last hole and closed with an 84. NAU ended its 2012-13 season after winning its seventh all-time Big Sky title and representing the conference on the NCAA regional stage.

"This leaves a sour taste in my mouth as a competitor but as a whole we accomplished our goal of winning the conference and we showed up here and got this opportunity and privilege to compete against some of the best teams in the country," Bedortha said. "At the end of the day it was definitely a very successful season and a very positive one for us."
