OAHU, Hawaii - Northern Arizona University's golf team competed at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational this past week. The team finished fifth in its final competition of the semester.
NAU scored a season-best 297 as a team on the final day of play. The Lumberjacks were led by senior Kaitlen Parsons who posted her best scores of the season throughout the tournament. Parsons put together rounds of 73, 72 and 74 which were good for an individual second place finish. For her strong play, Parsons was named Big Sky Golfer of the Week, the third of her career.
"She played great all week and it was great to see her step up and play at such a high level," said Head Coach Brad Bedortha. "She played really well in the practice round so I was confident that she would have a great tournament."
NAU's Savana Bezdicek was also a major contributor as she finished tied for 11th place. Bezdicek bounced back from a less than impressive round one with scores of 73 and 72 in rounds two and three, respectively. The Lumberjacks also received contributions from Brittany McKee who finished tied for 27th place, Susana Mejia who finished 34th and Laura Jabczenski who finished tied for 49th. McKee seemed to get more comfortable as the tournament went on as she improved on her scores everyday posting rounds of 80, 77 and 74 in succession. Mejia contributed some strong play in her season debut with a stroke average of 78.3 throughout the tournament.
"I had a talk with the team and told them we need people to step up and play better," Bedortha said. "We're better than our play has shown and we needed to start proving it. This is the kind of play we need going into the spring in order to be competitive."
The tournament serves as a great way for the team to gain some confidence and momentum going into the break. The Lumberjacks will compete next at the Grand Canyon Spring Invitational on February 24th.
