McGuire Earns Big Sky Soccer Co-Offensive Player of the Week Honors
COMPLETE BIG SKY
OGDEN, Utah – Junior Midfielder Corie McGuire has been named Big Sky Co-Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday. The award is the first for McGuire and the second for Northern Arizona this season, as sophomore midfielder Lauren Zallis was named Offensive Player of the Week on August 24.
McGuire shares the weekly accolade with Eastern Washington forward Brittany Sparks, while Sacramento State goalkeeper Savannah Abercrombie was named Defensive Player of the Week.
The junior from Huntington Beach, Calif. scored both Northern Arizona goals in the Lumberjacks 2-1 upset of previously undefeated New Mexico on Friday night in Albuquerque. After evening the score at 1-1 with her first-career goal in the 60th minute, McGuire would net the game-winner on a penalty kick in the 72nd minute to give NAU the victory.
After starting just one game and not recording a point through her initial-two seasons at Northern Arizona, McGuire has two goals and one assist this season for five points and has started the last five games for the Lumberjacks, a stretch in which the team has posted a 4-1 record. She has made six total starts this season while appearing in 10 of 11 games, and is fourth on the team in points (5) and fifth in shots (10).
The Lumberjacks are off this week before opening Big Sky-play at Sacramento State on Friday, October 9, at 1 p.m.
