FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona soccer team (0-6-1) returns to the field for Day 2 of the Hilton Garden Inn High Altitude Tournament on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they host Evansville (1-5-2). The Lumberjacks are coming off a 2-2 tie with Ball State on Friday, which snapped their season-opening six match losing streak.
Against Ball State on Friday night, senior Sam Monahan netted her team-leading third goal of the season and paced the NAU offensive attack with five shots for the game. Senior Jenna Samora also scored her first goal of the season, to tie the game at 2-2, for the Lumberjacks. Sophomore Lauren Weaver came off the bench and played 93 minutes without allowing a goal while making a career-high 11 saves.
Junior Chaviel Harrison, last week's Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week, made seven saves during Evansville's 2-2 tie with Lamar on Friday during Day 1 of the High Altitude Tournament. Offensively, the Purple Aces are led by sophomore Stephanie Thompson, who recorded her team-leading second goal of the season in Friday afternoon's match. In total, six different Purple Aces have scored a goal so far this season.
"We're a team wearing a hard hat, we're under construction right now," said head coach Andre Luciano. "We have to roll up our sleeves and look to outwork Evansville. Between the returning players, we have 42 championships whether it is conference tournament championships or regular season titles. This team has won before and we know how to win. We have to start to have a swagger and get our mojo back in terms of believing we can win."
The second day of the tournament will kick off at Lumberjack Stadium with Ball State (2-3-1) taking on Lamar (1-2-1) at 10 a.m., before NAU squares off with Evansville at 1 p.m.
