For Long Beach State
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The Northern Arizona women's soccer team will kick-off their 2013 season on the road Friday, Aug. 23, against Long Beach State at George Allen Field at 7 p.m. The Lumberjacks will head back to Flagstaff for their home opener Sunday, Aug. 25, against Lamar at 12 p.m. at Lumberjack Stadium.
This will be the first meeting between Northern Arizona and Long Beach State. There has been only one game between Lamar and Northern Arizona back in 2007, which NAU won 7-0.
Scouting Northern Arizona
The Lumberjacks bring back a veteran group infused with some young talent. The team brings back 10 of 11 starters and also adding 15 newcomers. Seniors Alana D'Onofrio, Lauren Weaver and Shawnee Morgan look to lead this team back into the Big Sky Conference Tournament.
Scouting Long Beach State
Long Beach State brings back a good team who made the NCAA Tournament last year, losing in the first round to No. 17 Santa Clara. In 2012, the team finished 12-8-0 with 5-4-0 record in the Big West Conference. The team returns midfielder Eileen Maes who had nine goals and three assists for a total of 21 points last season.
The Cardinals are coming of their best season in school history posting a 11-9-1 record, finishing second in the conference. The team also had its first Southland Conference Championship game in school history under first year coach Orlando Cervantes. Cervantes, entering his second season at Lamar, returns home to the state of Arizona where he attended high school at Corona Del Sol in Tempe, Ariz.
